Bye, Bye Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10

Microsoft has recently announced that as of January 12th, Microsoft will no longer support Internet Explorer 8, 9 or 10. I can hear a few cheers coming from the web and IT teams in our office. Microsoft has finally decided to officially retire the aforementioned Internet Explorer versions for most Windows operating systems, according to a Microsoft support page.

What does this mean for Internet Explorer users?

Starting January 12, 2016, only the most recent version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical supports and security updates. Internet Explorer 11 is the last version of Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer 11 will be the only officially supported version of the browser for Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 and the only version which will continue to receive security updates, compatibility fixes, and technical support on these operating systems.

What should I do if I have Internet Explorer 8, 9 or 10?

As Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for older versions of Internet Explorer after January 12, you should upgrade to Internet Explorer 11 as soon as possible. You may also like to consider switching to a different browser, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

How do I go about upgrading?

If you require a browser upgrade for your home PC or have a small to mid-size business (with less than 500 employees) and no web applications you can update automatically using Automatic Updates. If you are a home user, you probably have Automatic Updates already turned on and have already upgraded to Internet Explorer 11. If you haven’t turned on Automatic Updates yet, you can do so by clicking the Check for Updates button in the Windows Update section of the Control Panel.

If you have a small or medium sized business and your organisation has dependencies on existing web applications you should get in touch with a Microsoft Certified Partner like AWD in order to work out the best options to meet your business needs.

What if I my company is a large enterprise?

There are a range of in-depth Microsoft resources and tools available to large organizations (500+ employees) to assist with the deployment and management of Windows, Office and Internet Explorer products and technologies. Contact Microsoft or a Certified Microsoft Partner to find out more about migration and deployment programs. As a Certified Microsoft Partner, AWD can advise you on the best migration and deployment approach for your organisation and assist you with any other IT support issues.
